The word “haredi” is a catchall term, either an adjective or a noun, which covers a broad array of theologically, politically, and socially conservative Orthodox Jews, sometimes referred to as “ultra-Orthodox.” Ultra Orthodox Jews are religious fundamentalists who can be found living in segregated communities in parts of North America, Europe and Israel. These Jews, called ''Haredim'' in Hebrew, isolate themselves from the general society and adhere to strict moral codes that dictate everything from politics to daily interactions between men and women. The term most commonly used by outsiders, for example most American news organizations, is ultra-Orthodox Judaism. Hillel Halkin suggests the origins of the term may date to the 1950s, a period in which Haredi survivors of the Holocaust first began arriving in America.
